Relevant information is posted at https://www.facebook.com/events/144201736315957/?ti=cl On Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Panola Mountain State Park, Phil Delestrez is leading a wildflower walk, which will also be a spring butterfly walk. Information about the walk is available at this link. Panola covered in blooming wildflowers is a beautiful sight, and Phil always has interesting observations about the natural world. There is a $10 per hiker fee, and a $5 parking fee at Panola. The walk is roughly 3.3 miles roundtrip and walkers are encouraged to wear bug spray and bring water. May 2018 May 4 the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail is having a Spring Symposium in Plains, Georgia. Details regarding the 2018 Piedmont NWR and Bond Swanp NWR NABA Counts Here is some general information for anyone interested in the 2018 Piedmont NWR and Bond Swamp NWR NABA Counts. For more information on the Piedmont NWR click this link - Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. To participate in these counts you must register beforehand with Refuge Assistant Manager, Carolyn Johnson at 478-986-5441 or [email protected] . Any additional questions should be directed to Carolyn. You will be sent more specific directions after you have registered. We don't teach butterflies on these counts, they are strictly surveys and not field trips. Registration deadlines are: May 9th for the Piedmont NWR May 18th Count June 13th for the Piedmont NWR Jun 22 Count: July 3rd for the Bond Swamp NWR July 13th Count ** Sep 5th for the Piedmont NWR September 14th Count General Piedmont NWR Count Information: All counts are expected to run from 8:30am until 5pm. Due to current staffing, the refuge will not be able to provide transportation and drivers. Please be prepared to drive your own vehicle. The Refuge roads are graveled and there are some rough fords, so compact cars are not a good idea. Cell phone coverage on the refuge is spotty to non existent. Butterflying will involve slowly walking dirt roads, hiking power lines, searching fields, wetlands etc. Be prepared to bushwhack through briars, mosquito and tick infested hardwood bottoms. Fast food restaurants are not available. You should pack your own snacks, a lunch and lots of fluids. Please note: Minors under 18 cannot ride in government vehicles or participate in refuge sponsored events without a parental consent form signed. Also no pets, weapons or alcohol please! **There is no office at Bond Swamp NWR. The count is expected to run from 8:30am until 5pm. Bond Swamp may require a 4WD vehicle with good clearance. It is a swamp and county roads flood often. Vehicle access is very limited so there is much more walking. Lunch will be at a fast food restaurant, usually at a Subway. You are free to bring your own if you desire. On June 17, 2017, Dr. Jim Porter and Dr. Karen Porter led a walk in the woods at the Athens-Clarke County Tallassee Forest Conservation Area. After the walk, the Porters graciously opened their home for iced tea and shared his collections of Tallassee Forest moths and Eugen Esper’s Eighteenth Century watercolors of tropical butterflies and illustrated specimens. On June 3, 2017, Jill Gorman hosted a butterfly garden open house near Duluth. Her garden was inspiring. She shared tips for butterflying garden success. On May 21, 2017, Henning Von Schmeling led a Butterfly Walk at the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. On April 8, 2017, Rose Payne led a Butterfly Walk at Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. On March 11, 2017, Scott Anderson spoke about the National Butterfly Center and the Texas Butterfly Festival. During this meeting we also provided our official chapter 2016 financial records and elected our executive board. On February 12, 2017, we heard from Dr. James Porter, Meigs Professor of Ecology, University of Georgia.
